The Department's vision is focused on and aligned with the principles of quality, transparency and innovation outlined in the University's Strategic Planning. Specifically, the scientific mission of the Department is focused on the study of the molecular bases and pathogenetic mechanisms of complex diseases with high clinical-epidemiological impact, such as hereditary-metabolic, infectious, hematologic, oncologic, degenerative, and inflammatory-chronic, maternal-infantile, developmental age, and adult diseases, in order to:

  1. implement programs of molecular, genetic, immunologic diagnostics and advanced radiologic imaging;
  2. develop innovative therapeutic interventions based on techniques of gene manipulation, cell therapy, robotic and computer-assisted surgery, integrated with cutting-edge surgical and microsurgical, orthopedic and plastic reconstructive procedures and drug therapies directed toward specific molecular targets;
  3. develop new multidisciplinary approaches for the treatment of skull base pathologies, with particular reference to endoscopic surgical techniques;
  4. implement, with an integrated multidisciplinary approach, pre- and post-graduate educational models aimed at developing first a solid internist and surgical-general culture and then a specialist culture marked by innovation, clinical transferability of new biological knowledge and interdisciplinarity.

The Department, within its three core activities, namely teaching, research and third mission, wants to highlight its development potential by enhancing its strengths in line with the University's planning.

In the area of research, the department wants to enhance the skills of present groups, especially young researchers, including through inter-departmental collaborations and interaction with local businesses, Italian and foreign research centers.

As far as teaching is concerned, the courses of study pertaining to the Department train students by proposing objectives of advanced, up-to-date and highly professionalizing skills. The Department's mission in education is to ensure a high level of teaching delivery. The Postgraduate and Master's Courses offered by the Department aim to further improve the level of specialization and qualification of participants.

Finally, with regard to the Third Mission, the department aims in particular to: disseminate scientific culture and knowledge gained through research to the public; enhance its potential through the dissemination of research activities among the department's own teaching staff so as to create inter-disciplinary research projects; and promote the presentation of projects by young researchers to foster their professional growth.
